Weekly Words of Wisdom

"It is true that one cannot always be positive. At such times one may retire from one's associates. But as you evolve so your contact becomes more powerful than the influence of the other person. Therefore the other person receives more benefit from you, while the harm you receive is less. If by receiving a little harm you are able to do more good to the other person, it is just as well. It is only a matter of self-discipline, and love can conquer all things. In every person, however wicked, there is a good string somewhere; you must know where to find it. If one always thought about it, one could always touch the best point of the other person and overlook the other points."

(Hazrat Inayat Khan, The Mysticism of Sound and Music)

Places of Worship: The Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is the most sacred site in Islam and the oldest mosque in history. The Quran states that the Kaaba was constructed by Abraham and his son Ishmael. All Muslims around the world face the Kaaba during prayers five times a day. It is covered by a black silk and gold curtain. About two-thirds of the way up runs a band of gold-embroidered calligraphy with Quranic text, including the Islamic declaration of faith.

In modern times, entry to the Kaaba's interior is generally not permitted except for certain rare occasions and for a limited number of guests. Inside the Kaaba, there is a marble and limestone floor. The interior walls are clad with marble halfway to the roof, tablets with Quranic inscriptions are inset in the marble. The top part of the walls are covered with a green cloth decorated with gold embroidered Quranic verses. Caretakers perfume the marble cladding with scented oil.

One of the five pillars of Islam requires every Muslim to perform the Hajj pilgrimage at least once in his or her lifetime if they are able to do so. Multiple parts of the Hajj require pilgrims to walk seven times around the Kaaba in anticlockwise direction. Official figures count about 6 million pilgrims simultaneously gathering to circle the building on the same day during the time of the Hajj. The origin of the Hajj pilgrimage goes back to Abraham.
